34-consumers-voice-cartoon-vision-board“One look is worth a thousand words.” The phrase was published by Fred R. Barnard in a 1921 advertising trade journal Printer’s Ink.  Incredibly, ninety years later, it is still used in its slightly altered modern form, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”  The reason this phrase survived the decades is because it still holds true.  With so many pictures available to us today, it’s almost impossible not to use them and be inspired by them when creating our visions (hair styles, fashion ideas, tree house designs, kitchen remodels – you see where this is going).  A kitchen vision board is a great way to display your kitchen remodel inspirations.

What is a Vision Board?

Wikipedia defines a vision board as “a simple but powerful visualization tool that activates the universal law of attraction to begin manifesting your dreams into reality.”  The notion is that when you surround yourself with these images, they will eventually become a reality.  In the world of kitchen design, we will alter this a bit to “a place to compile all of your kitchen design ideas – be they needs, wants or wildest dreams.”  If you yearn to have it in your kitchen remodel, it goes on your kitchen vision board.

How to create your Kitchen Vision Board

In order to create your kitchen vision board, you will need pictures that inspire your remodel.  Cut them out of magazines, print them off of the internet and take your own.  Include everything from paint sample cards to pictures of nature that give that peaceful feeling you desire in your home.  Feel free to cut out or write a few words that describe your dream kitchen (such as bright, bold, dark, warm) or symbols that keep you on track (a sun if you want light, recycle symbol if you desire an eco-friendly kitchen).  Make sure to keep the images small enough to fit on your board.

The board can be a poster or a bulletin board if you’ll continually add to it, or a large picture frame for more concrete ideas that won’t require much change.  It can be as large or as small as you wish.  After choosing your images and board, it’s time to secure them.  Paste or tack the pictures to the board in a way that makes sense to you. The cleaner you make it appear, the more you’ll want to look at it, which is the point of the project.

Where to use it

Once you’ve finalized your visions (at least for the time being) place the kitchen vision board somewhere you’ll notice it daily.  For obvious reasons, the kitchen would be a spectacular place to hang it.  If you don’t have enough room in your kitchen, place your board beside your bed as a reminder every morning and night.

Inspire your designers

When it comes time to plan your remodel, bring your vision board, or pictures of it to the kitchen designer of your choice.  Sit down with them and explain why you chose the pictures, what the words mean and why these visions are important.  It may surprise you how easily they’ll be able to make this dream a reality.

With a kitchen vision board, it’ll be like reading a novel of ideas at one glance.  All visions will be on one surface, and when viewed daily you’re not likely to lose sight of these dreams.  So be creative and start visualizing – you won’t regret it.
